John Newton - wordspring creative groupI love the story of John Newton because it is the story of how timeless words can be born through the life of a wretch.

Son of a sailor. He was on board a ship constantly from the age of 12. He deserted a war ship, was flogged and finally requested to serve on a slave ship. While on board he was abused. He was rescued from that ship by a friend of his late father and later became a commander of a slave ship where he gladly particiapted in the capture and transport of slaves to America.

However, on a homeward voyage, while he was attempting to steer the ship through a violent storm, he experienced what he was to refer to later as his “great deliverance.” He recorded in his journal that when all seemed lost and the ship would surely sink, he exclaimed, “Lord, have mercy upon us.” Later in his cabin he reflected on what he had said and began to believe that God had addressed him through the storm and that grace had begun to work for him.

Although that was the time he first received the grace, the journey continued...

He and William Cowper were a strange duo but together they wrote the most inspired literature our our faith and in the history of art and poetry.
